Virtual Tikkun is a Torah reading practice application. This policy explains what information we collect, why we collect it, and what choices you have. It applies to the website at myvirtualtikkun.com and to the Virtual Tikkun mobile app.
You create an account with your email address and a password, or with a Google account. With email, we keep your email address, your first and last name, and a secure hash of your password, never the password itself. With Google, Google shares your email address, name, and profile picture with us; we do not receive your Google password, and we cannot see anything else in your Google account.
You may add or change your first and last name, your default community, and a profile photo.
We store the work you do in the app so it is there when you come back and stays in sync across your devices: bookmarked readings, per-verse progress and notes, learning session history, and any audio recordings you make or upload. When you ask the app to split a recording into verses, the audio is transcribed so the app can find where each verse begins.
If you send feedback, invite someone to collaborate, or use in-app chat, we store those messages so the feature works.
If you use the VT Assistant on the website, the questions you type and the reading you are looking at are sent to an AI model to produce an answer, with a summary of your recent practice (how often and how long you have practised, and which readings) so the answer can take it into account. They are not used to train the model.
If you subscribe, payment is handled by Stripe on the website. We receive your subscription status and plan, never your card number.
When you start your free trial you may choose to receive news and updates by email. You can change this at any time in Settings, then Preferences. We send account and service emails, such as invitations and replies to your feedback, whatever you choose.
We record basic usage of the app — which features are used and when — using our own analytics, stored in our own database. We do not use Google Analytics or any third-party advertising or tracking service, and we do not sell or share your data with advertisers.
We use this information to operate the app: to sign you in, to save and sync your practice across devices, to enable collaboration between students and teachers, to respond to your feedback, to send news and updates if you asked for them, and to understand which parts of the app are useful so we can improve them. We do not use it for advertising.
We share information with a small number of providers strictly so they can perform services for us:
| Provider | What it handles |
|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, authentication, file storage |
| Sign-in | |
| Resend | Sending email (feedback replies, invitations, notifications) |
| Stripe | Subscription payments |
| Groq | Transcribing a recording to find its verses, when you split one |
| Fly.io | Cutting a recording into verses, when you split one |
| Anthropic | Answering questions to the VT Assistant on the website |
| TalkJS | In-app chat |
| Zoom | Video sessions, when you schedule one |
| Cloudflare | Hosting Torah scroll images and related content |
| Fundraise Up | Processing a donation you make on our donate page, for our fiscal sponsor Upstart |
We do not sell your personal information.
Virtual Tikkun is used by students preparing to read Torah, and some of them are under 13.
For a student under 13, we ask that a parent, guardian, or the supervising teacher or synagogue set up the account and consent to our collecting the information described above. We collect from a child only what the app needs to function — sign-in information, practice progress, and any recordings the student makes — and we do not use it for advertising or disclose it to anyone other than the service providers listed above.
A parent or guardian may review what we have collected about their child, ask us to delete it, or refuse to allow further collection, by writing to us at the address below. We will act on the request and, where we cannot continue to provide the app without the information, close the account.
We keep your information for as long as your account is active.
To delete your account yourself, open Settings in the app or on the website, choose Profile, and tap Delete Account. The deletion is immediate and cannot be undone. If you have a paid subscription, cancel it first (Settings, then Subscription); the Delete Account button is disabled until the subscription is no longer renewing.
If you no longer have the app, or would rather we do it, email support@virtualtikkun.com from the address on the account and we will delete it for you.
What is deleted: your profile and sign-in, your name, email address and photo, your readings and practice progress, your notes, your private recordings and any audio you uploaded, your billing record with our payment processor, and your place as a mentor or student on other people's readings.
What is kept: recordings you chose to share with your community stay available to that community, and feedback you sent us stays in our records. Both are kept without your name or any link to your account. If you want a shared recording removed as well, make it private in the app before deleting your account, or tell us in your email.
You can also delete individual recordings, notes and readings at any time in the app without deleting your account.
Data is transmitted over encrypted connections and stored in Supabase with access controls that restrict each user's data to that user and to anyone they have explicitly invited to collaborate. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be announced in the app.
